Starting a family

If you take a break from work to have a family and you’re on maternity leave, your pension contributions will continue based on the pensionable pay you actually receive.

You continue to be protected by Life Assurance cover during your maternity leave, based on your full pre-maternity level of pensionable pay.

If you take paternity leave, this is for two weeks on full pay and your pension contributions aren’t affected.

Returning to work

Your pensionable service is not affected by periods of maternity or paternity leave.

Coming back part time? If your working pattern changes and you work shorter hours, the pensionable service used to calculate your pension will be lower so you’ll receive less pension. You might want to think about whether you need to save more now by paying AVCs.
